History Student of Universitas Udayana Selected as Presenter at the National Student History Seminar History Week 2025 at UGM
A student of the History Study Program, Universitas Udayana, Nauval Azhar Romadhoni, has successfully been selected as a presenter at the National Student History Seminar (SSMN) History Week 2025, organized by Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) Yogyakarta on October 22, 2025. This achievement marks a moment of pride for the History Study Program, Faculty of Humanities, Universitas Udayana, as it demonstrates the academic quality and research capability of its students in the field of historical studies.
In this prestigious national academic forum, Nauval presented a paper entitled “Hotel Besar Purwokerto (1930–1933): Arena of Conversion of Peranakan Chinese Capital during the Economic Depression and the Emergence of a New Social Sphere in Banyumas.” The research examines how the Peranakan Chinese community in Purwokerto utilized their economic capital through the establishment of Hotel Besar as an adaptive strategy amid the pressures of the 1930s Economic Depression. The paper also highlights the role of the hotel as a new social space that fostered cross-community interaction within the Banyumas region.
This study is considered to contribute significantly to enriching local economic and social history, particularly regarding the dynamics of the Peranakan Chinese community during the colonial period and the transformation of public spaces in Banyumas. The approach demonstrates a strong integration of economic, social, and cultural analysis aligned with contemporary historiographical developments.
SSMN History Week is a reputable national academic event that brings together students from various universities in Indonesia to share ideas, research findings, and recent historiographical perspectives. Through a highly selective process, only the best works were chosen to be presented in this forum.
The Coordinator of the History Study Program, Anak Agung Inten Asmariati, S.S., M.A., expressed her appreciation for this achievement. She emphasized that the student’s success in participating at the national level reflects the Study Program’s commitment to developing students’ research skills, critical thinking, and academic confidence.
Through participation in SSMN History Week 2025, it is hoped that students of the History Study Program, Universitas Udayana, will become increasingly motivated to produce high-quality research and actively engage in national and international academic forums. This achievement also strengthens the academic reputation of the History Study Program at the national level.
